The election in Georgia

People in Georgia were voting against something, rather than for something.

The divide in our state, like the divide in our country, is still there.

The spread in Georgia was 55-45 on almost every statewide race. (There were exceptions. The cosmos smiled on U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff when it gave him his opponent, Mike Collins.) The election was not about the quality of the candidates. It was about a rogue president and the party that supported him.

Donald Trump asked voters to pretend that he was on the ballot. They didn’t need any encouragement.

Votes against are cast in anger. That’s a powerful force to get people to the polls, but it’s not sustainable. I hope the people who went to the polls will stick around and talk with each other and try to form a broader consensus, one that is less heartless toward those who are struggling to make a living wage and less forgiving of the corrupt.

I think that we could get close to 60-40 on those two points alone.
